Teens Mingle with Award-Winning Authors at Rochester Book Festival

Students from three Syracuse City School District high schools spent a recent Saturday mingling with some of the best young adult authors in the business at the 2012 Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival.

The students and librarians who attended the festival at Nazareth College came from Nottingham, Henninger and ITC. They had the opportunity to ask the writers questions and collect their autographs. Among the writers who attended the conference was Laurie Halse Anderson, a former SCSD student, and the author of several best-selling novels including Speak and Chains. Also on hand was Gabrielle Zevin, who wrote Elsewhere and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac.
Maureen Kendrick, the library media specialist at Nottingham, planned the trip and students in book clubs from Henninger and ITC were invited to join in.
Organizers said the goals of the gathering include: connecting teen readers to award-winning young adult writers; entertaining, educating and enriching teens and other festival participants; encouraging interaction between aspiring writers and established authors; and bringing together teens who enjoy reading.
